Pigment Selection

When preparing an ink system, we should first consider the form of pigment used and the stability of long-term storage. The optional pigment forms are dry pigment, filter cake and dispersed pigment. One advantage of choosing dry pigment is that dry pigment is 100% dry product, so there is no need to test the concentration of pigment in ink; For filter cake or dispersed pigment, experiments must be carried out to determine the concentration of pigment in ink. Moreover, dry pigments are easier to handle than the other two forms of pigments. The properties of dry pigments will not change for a certain period of time or even a few years. Another reason for choosing dry pigments is that they have a wide range of manufacturers.

1. Opaque pigment: opaque pigment can be used in some Water based inks with low transparency requirements. Opaque pigments can be used as Water based inks for printing paper, paperboard, polyethylene, polypropylene, corrugated paper and label paper. The opacity of pigment provides a good hiding power for pigment, so the ink prepared by opaque pigment is often used in corrugated paper and packaging paper printing. Opaque pigments have large particle size, easy dispersion, good sun resistance and low fluidity.

2. Transparent pigment: printing high-quality prints, such as labels and paper, requires transparent and glossy printing ink. Particle school pigments are often used as pigments. In many packaging fields, transparent pigments can provide better gloss, high printing strength and dyeing strength. Due to the small particle size and transparency, transparent pigments have lower fading than opaque pigments.

When preparing water based pigment ink, it is very important to resinify the pigment. The addition of resin during or after pigment coupling can prevent crystal growth, thus contributing to pigment dispersion and transparency. The resin can also wrap the pigment particles to make the pigment more easily dispersed in the pre dispersion process. Compared with non resin pigments, resin pigments can produce more transparent inks. Pigments developed in aqueous ink system can give excellent transparency, gloss and low fluidity, but these pigments are not suitable in solvent ink.
