Water based liquid polymers - Characteristics

Functions: dispersion, flocculation, viscosity enhancement, drag reduction, film-forming and other physical functions.

Functions of water-soluble polymers

· Dispersion and suspension: it contains hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, has surface activity, reduces the surface tension of water and helps to wet the solid, which is particularly beneficial to the suspension and dispersion of powder in water.

· Flocculation: the solid particles adsorbed by polar groups in water make the particles bridge and flocculate into large aggregates. It is used in water treatment with less dosage and high efficiency.

· Viscosity increasing: the effect of increasing the apparent viscosity of aqueous solution or aqueous dispersion.

· Drag reduction: the flow resistance of fluid can be greatly reduced (50% ~ 80%)

1. Water soluble cellulose derivatives modified by natural polymer cellulose;

2. Synthetic water-soluble polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyoxyethane, polyacrylamide, etc;

Water based liquid polymers - polymerization methods:

① Polyethylene glycol: ethylene glycol is used as the initiator, caustic soda aqueous solution is used as the catalyst, and ethylene oxide is heated and reacted in a autoclave. Temperature 150 ~ 180 ℃, pressure 0.3 ~ 0.6MPa. When the molecular weight meets the requirements, stop heating, depressurize, add acid for neutralization, filter, cool and package as commodities.

② Polyoxyethylene: ethylene oxide and catalyst (strontium carbonate) are obtained by catalytic ring opening polymerization in low boiling fatty acids (hexane and isooctane).


Water based liquid polymers - properties and applications:

① Polyethylene glycol

The molecular weight is 200 ~ 600, and it is liquid at room temperature. It is easily soluble in water, and the viscosity of aqueous solution increases with the increase of molecular weight.

Polyethylene glycol is soluble in polar organic solvents such as alcohol, ether alcohol, ethylene glycol, ester, ketone and aromatic monster, but insoluble in fat warp, cycloaliphatic warp and some low polar solvents.

Polyethylene glycol has hygroscopic and moisturizing properties, which decrease with the increase of molecular weight.


② Polyoxyethylene

White powder, melting point 65 ℃, glass transition temperature - 50 ℃, soluble in water and chlorination, soluble in alcohol, ketone, ester, ether and other solvents when heated.

Polyoxyethylene is used as flocculant in coal washing, hydrometallurgy and paper industry. As a dispersant, it is used in medicine, chemical industry and so on. As a thickener, it is used in latex coating, cleaning agent, petroleum industry and construction industry. As a drag reducer, it is used for fire extinguishing, fluid transportation, etc.


Water based liquid polymers - properties:

White to light yellow powder particles, water solubility is related to their degree of hydrolysis and molecular weight. Products with high degree of hydrolysis (98 ~ 99%) are only soluble in hot water. The product with medium degree of hydrolysis (87 ~ 89%) is soluble in water at room temperature.

It reacts with aldehyde to form acetal. The most important industry is formaldehyde, which is the raw material of vinylon fiber; The second is butyraldehyde, which is mainly used as the interlayer of safety glass.


Water based liquid polymers - Applications:

Polyvinyl alcohol is mainly used to produce vinylon fiber, followed by textile slurry, adhesive, coating and dispersant.

As a polishing agent in the paper industry, it can increase the strength and oil resistance of paper.
